Science – Chemistry – How atom bond

Posted on: October 16, 2016

Part I:

There are 4 possible structures that are formed when elements bond:

  • molecular covalent
  • giant covalent
  • metallic bonding
  • ionic bonding

Part II:

Covalent Bond:

covalent-bond

Giant Covalent Bond:

giant-covalent-bond

  • element of Group 4, Carbon and Silicon

Metallic Bond:

metallic-bond

  • atoms are bonded by sea of electrons
  • the loose electrons means metals conduct electricity and heat very well
  • the non-fixed nature of the bonds mean the atoms can slide pass each other so metal can bend

Ionic Bond:

ionic-bond

  • high melting and boiling point

Summary:

bond

Vocab:

volatile: evaporate easily or are gases. E.g. Most compound between non-metallic element are volatile
