Chinese – Comprehension 25 – 伯牙和钟子期

Posted on: April 19, 2016

This story tells the first encountering of Bo Ya, a very famous qin player, and Zhong Ziqi, who later became Bo Ya’s 知音 (literally “to know the tone”, which mean a close and sympathetic friend). Their story exemplifies the Chinese ideal of friendship. When Ziqi died, Bo Ya broke the strings [of his qin] and vowed never to play [the qin] again, as there was no one who could understand his tune like Ziqi.
