Holiday Movie – Les Choristes

Posted on: December 1, 2015

I came across this wonderful French movie in Youtube: “Les Choristes”. lesChoristes

The story is set in a time shortly after World War II.

In 1949 Clement Mathieu, a washed-out music teacher and composer, gets a last-chance job as a teaching assistant in a boarding school for orphans and troubled kids, Fond de L’Étang (“Bottom of the Pond”). The place is directed by principal M. Rachin, an egotistical disciplinarian whose official unofficial mantra for the school is “action – reaction”, meaning that there will be severe consequences for any boy out of line. Although he does find the boys an unruly lot, Mathieu does not believe in the “action – reaction” policy, choosing instead to encourage his students. With the reluctant approval of Rachin, Mathieu begins an experiment of trying to transform the overall atmosphere within the school, core within the experiment being to start a choir among his students. This move is a difficult one for him as a failed musician, as well as for the initially reluctant students. One of the biggest trouble-makers is Pierre Morhange, a kid “with the face of an angel but the difficult character”, who has an incredible singing voice. The successful effort to create a choir, with Morhange as the featured soloist, changes the students and the teacher.

And the review for the movie from Rotten Tomato site:

“While predictable, this low-key heartwarmer manages to be uplifting without overdoing the sentiment.”

Ya, it’s a heartwarmer, and my girls and I enjoy a heartwarming night watching the movie together.

Also, there are beautiful songs sung in the movie (though I don’t know what they are singing about :P). We continue watching the “Les Choristes en Concert” after the movie. And actually for French class students, they can practice their skill translating lyrics of songs.

My favorites:

Caresses Sur L’océan”

Vois sur ton chemin”
