太守 vs 刺史 vs 州牧 vs 诸侯

Posted on: October 18, 2015

Some of the terms you might come across when reading “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” 《三国演义》:

  • 太守 – prefecture of a city, equivalent to a mayor now 市长
  • 刺史, 州牧 – governor of a province
  • 诸侯 – feudal lord

For example, Liu Biao 刘表 was the Governor of Jing province 荆州.
In Jing province 荆州, there were cities like Xiang Yang 襄阳, Nan Yang 南阳, Chang Sha 长沙, etc. Therefore we have Mayor of Chang Sha 长沙太守, Mayor of Nan Yang 南阳太守, etc.
And Cao Cao 曹操 was the Feudal Lord and he had four provinces under him: Qing, Xu, Bing, Yan(青,徐,并,兖州).

Here is a more detail explanation but in Chinese traditional.
