I read this story from FB. I like it very much. Let me translate to English.

King Arthur was captured and supposedly should be hang.
But the enemy King found him quite young and optimistic, quite admired him. Therefore, the enemy King came out with a question. If King Author could answer it, he could gain his freedom.
The question was: “What does a woman really want?”

King Author started to ask around for the right answer. He asked the princesses, the priests, wise men, but none could give him a satisfactory answer.
Someone told him, in the castle in the deep deep forest, there lived a witch. There was nothing she didn’t know. But she would ask for very expensive pay or weird things as return.

As he was running out of time, King Author had no choice but to seek help from the witch. The witch agreed to help but with condition, she wanted to marry King Arthur’s best friend, Gavin.
King Author was shocked to hear that. Looking at the witch, she was very ugly, hunchback, with only one tooth left, and stinking scent from her body.
Gavin, was a handsome, honest and kind man. And he was one of the bravest knight.

King Author refused, “No, I couldn’t force my friend to marry you just to get my freedom! Else, I won’t be able to forgive myself for the rest of my life.”
When Gavin learned about that, he told King Author, “I will marry the witch, for you and for our country.”
The wedding was on and the witch gave the answer, “What a woman really want, is to be in control of their life/fate.”
And King Arthur was released.

In the wedding, the witch ate using her hands, burped, everyone found her disgusting. King Arthur felt very bad and cried, but Gavin was acting as humble and gentle as usual.

At the wedding night, even though a lot of people were trying to stop Gavin from entering his room, but they failed. Gavin entered the room but to find a beautiful woman lying on his bed.
“In a day, half of the time I will appear as ugly witch, and half of the time I will appear as a beautiful woman. Gavin dear, would you like me to be a beautiful woman at night or day time ?” the witch asked.

Gavin answered, “Since you said what a woman really wants is to be in control of their own life/fate, then you decide.”
The witch was so touch and there was tears in her eyes, “I choose to be beautiful in day time and also at night, because you do really respect me.”

Learnt about this great site: Learning English Online http://www.englisch-hilfen.de/en/ from FB.

learnenglish

It comes with online exercises as well.

Will let me kids use it during the coming long holiday. (Ya, we don’t encourage them using too much computer)

But first, the Mummy needs to go through and select/plan the topics for them.

Sometimes I need to take a break and stay up a bit longer, though the girls are bidding goodnight. I guess they prefer me to go to bed together, and here comes the questions like, “Mummy, is it only adult then can sleep late?” “How long does adult need to sleep ? And how long does a kid need to sleep?”

Then I found this. Tah dah … showing them to my girls … hehehe

I have been wanting to do this, consolidate the list of 多音多意字 taught in Std 1 and Std 2.

Finally got time to compile the list. What I am doing with the list is let my girls read out loud – the best way I believe to learn Chinese characters with different pronunciation when used in different context.

I refer to the book 《华语参考资料》which is used in their school. Some words are quite hard.  May be can choose some easy one to start first, or learn page by page. Don’t one short ask a child to study the whole list.

Just sharing in case you find it useful.

Here is the list for Std 1:

Std1_updated.pdf  (Updated in April 2014, added some more vocabs, and explanation to those difficult words)

Here is for Std 2:

Std2_updated.pdf (Updated as of 30 April 2014, fixed typo error, added some more vocabs, and explanation to those difficult words)

Ling did some English exercise last night and somehow, she didn’t do well (misunderstood the question). She felt defeated as English is her favorite language.

It triggered me to share this song with them, which I once thought about doing that some day:

chumbawamba-tubthumping

“Tubthumping” by Chumbawamba.

.

Here is the lyrics:

I get knocked down, but I get up again
You’re never gonna keep me down
I get knocked down, but I get up again
You’re never gonna keep me down

(Pissing the night away, pissing the night away

He drinks a Whiskey drink, he drinks a Vodka drink
He drinks a Lager drink, he drinks a Cider drink
He sings the songs that remind him of the good times
He sings the songs that remind him of the better times
(Oh Danny Boy, Danny Boy, Danny Boy)

:

:

This is the song which keep me going during my Uni time, when life was tough then. It was playing in my ear when I was walking on the small path up to the hill where my faculty was, walking quite a distance to give home tuition, walking home because wanted to save the bus fare…

And I was glad the girls enjoyed the sing-along session last night.

.

p.s. We learn some English also. Do you know “To piss” has a different meaning in the UK than in the US — “Pissing the night away” would translate to “Drinking (alcoholic beverages) all night.” To be pissed in England is to be drunk, to be pissed in the US is to be angry.

I forgot where I got this book: “Titian Bahasa 3 Dalam 1”, by the Gemilang Publishing Sdn Bhd.

I like the Penjodoh Bilangan section, as it has nice illustration to make those penjodoh bilangan easier to understand; like when my girl asked me, “what is the different between ‘sehelai kain’ and ‘secebis kain’?”

Here is the explanation for “cebis” and I can show her the picture. Ya, I always believe learning is made easy with picture or illustration.

And I also ‘tumpang’ to learn the penjodoh bilangan “carik”, what is the different from “cebis”:

Also it’s bi-lingual, Chinese – BM, for both explanation and example sentences.

Just nice for Chinese school students, easy for them to pick up and learn new vocab.

Using below example for “gelung”, the contoh: kawat, dawai, tali, rotan, wayar.  In the next line it provides Chinese explanation for each of these words:
