To Ling & Ying:

Another newspaper cutting I kept last time. Haven’t had chance to read the book : 你还要躲一辈子吗?(Do you still want to hide your whole life?)

This is a snapshot of the book I read from 新洲日报, talking about the 5 most important ‘energy’ required in one’s life.   But I only kept the first 3 which I want you girls to remember and hopefully can practise in your life :

1 – BE TRUTHFUL TO YOURSELF. Listen to your heart. Must know what you are doing, and know the impact of your action to the people surrounding you, and even that, have the courage to do it, as you know what you are doing is the right thing to do. Be truthful to your self by listening to your heart and feel the serenity as you know what you do is right. Always remember this : 要有良知!!

2 – TRUST YOURSELF. Keep your promise you made to yourself. Know yourself, keep to your word, and your own promise, that is the only way to build your confident, as you trust and respect yourself. You know the real value of yourself. Mummy like this Chinese character a lot: 要实实在在的活着,踏踏实实的活着,做一个真实的我。

3 – COURAGE TO CHANGE. You need courage to change, to achieve the goal you set; you need courage when you are tired, when you fail, when you are in debt, when you are being misunderstood, when you are in conflict, when the world is turning away from  you; you need courage to say “No” to all the thing you shouldn’t do;  you need courage to say, “Yes, I can do it” and keep the commitment for thing that you must do. What you need to do is just to ‘collect’ the courage, and put them into action, courage to make the change and make things happen.

The other two energy which I miss out are:

4 – LOVE

5 – HAPPINESS

I hope this will help you all to live a successful and happy life.

Was tidying my desk and drawer when I found this paper cutting I kept some time ago.

How precise. The author compares the attitude of the American, Japanese and the German.

American: Talk and do together. They have the freedom of speech and their openness, allows people to talk while putting thing to action. Even though they might make a mistake in their speech or action, no one will blame them. That is the reason why it attracts good people from around the world to go there and making the country ahead from all.

Japanese: Do first then only talk. They put thing into action quietly and only talk (announce) when they are successful, didn’t waste time in empty talks. This lead the country to be out of the shadow of a loss in 2nd world war, and become the economically strong country in the 80s,  in just a short 20 years time.

German: Do and never waste time in blank talking. They are very practical and serious when come to work. That leads to the advance of their technology, like in automobile industry.

And the author ended with concern for a country that “Talk Only and Do Nothing”, where will it head to in near future.

Ya, one of the characteristic I dislike the most of a person is: 大只讲 (in Cantonese: dai chek kong).

Ling and Ying were busy with their own projects. Ling was creating ‘advance’ Happy Birthday card for all the family member, and asking around for our details like date of birth, place of birth. Ying as busy cutting and pasting papers.

Looking at them, I commented, “Girls, you all looks very busy hor..”

Ying answered while finishing up her tv (paper craft),”Ya, we are busy like a bee. Bee is busy making honey everyday.”  … hahaha

… and she showed her tv, “爸爸,你看我的电视机美吗?这个电视机很搞笑的,没有show的。” … hahaha

Ling begged me to read her their favourite story: Sleeping Beauty before their nap. I gave in and started reading while both of them listened quietly lying on their daytime bed.

When I read until the part “Everyone in the castle went about their work quietly while mourning the princess”, Ling stopped me.

“Mummy, what is mourning?”

“Oh, mourning is feeling sad when someone die. You see, like the people in the castle, all do work quietly, they are sad for Sleeping Beauty. ”

“You mourn when someone die…” before I could finish my line, Ling interrupted so quickly, ” and fall asleep.”

Oh dear, oh dear… wrong story to use.    hahaha..

Saw ASTRO advertising this Korean show 《成均馆绯闻》. I have finished watching on the net. The story line is very interesting, a little bit like the Chinese 《梁山伯祝英台》but better, ‘richer’.

I must say it’s another funny stories that must not miss. The guys are good looking, and all have their own of characteristic.

Continued reading this book by Rafe Esquith after stopping half way for quite some time. I bought a Chinese translated version. It’s a bit  …. ‘dull’ to me. Not the fact, but may be the way it’s written in Chinese, just may be. Not the kind of books where I couldn’t help completing it in a day, none stop reading if possible.

I share the same believe as the author about Reading and Writing.

For cultivating the interest in reading, there are some good guides provided by the author, like let the children find a book that suit their level to read, and a lot of time, children ‘need’ adult to accompany them to read and discuss on what they have read.

Reading is not a subject. It’s the basic of every day life.

Ya, I wish to give my children all these, the power to thinking , considerate to other’s point of view, open mind and the ability to discuss and share thoughts.. just like what is stated in the book (refer left).

I couldn’t help laughing looking at the 3 questions the students came out with to assess the reading efficiency :

1. Have you ever been in a situation where because what the teacher teaching in front was so boring and you were so into a book that you were reading the book instead during the class?

2. Have you even been scolded because you were reading while eating your meal?

3. Have you even been reading under your blanket at night though you were supposed to sleep?

And for writing, both my husband and I can’t agree more with this paragraph:

We need the skill set to convey our thought precisely, using the correct words, to express and convey messages across; and certainly not just to score in exam, but in our daily life.

And also the author shared that the children in his class spent 30 minutes every day before the formal class started, learning and practising/doing exercises for their English grammar. As for the author, he believes teaching writing, one important thing to start with is grammar. .. .. ..

PHD

Posted on: November 24, 2010

Came across this in yesterday 新洲日报-新教育. It read:

“我们每个人都在修人生的PHD:   (Everyone of us are doing our PHD study of my life now:)

P — Persistent 做事情有没有毅力,坚持,决心。

H — Humility 要谦虚,其实做所有的事,不过是尽本分而已。

D — Devotion 就是对工作有热情。那种奉献,热情,别人可以体会到。”
