“Every ordinarily organized child may become a superior man, if only he is excellently educated.”

:

“Remember, dear Karl,” he would say, in effect, “these poor people have not had the advantages enjoyed by you. If they do not speak correctly, if they do not always behave as they ought, it is because they have not been taught properly in their youth. You must not do as they do, but neither must you condemn them. On the contrary, remember that they are God’s children like yourself, and that in spite of their shortcomings, they are precious to Him.”

The Education of Karl Witte or The Training of The Child

Ling and Ying like to play the Logico Primo .

Logico Primo

It is a gift from my hubby’s close friend. But one thing need mentioning is that they like it because daddy plays with them.

Same hold for another good tool we both: Mind Sparklers.

Mind Sparklers

If we are both busy and no one entertaining them, they don’t seem like to touch the toy at all.

Another nice article by  Dr James Dobson I bump into from Edu Fun Club

Today I brought dad to do a CT scan. But I didn’t know that to perform a CT Scan of the abdomen, we should not have anything to eat for at least 4 hours. Need to have fasting. Same apply to gastrointestinal endoscopy procedure. The best is fasting after the dinner the night before.

Luckily after such a long wait in the hospital, the result turned out to be fine. At least not the C that huanted me the whole night. What a relief.

I heard from a friend’s friend that her mother was having the same symptoms as dad: excessive sleepiness, bloating( a lot of winds), fatigue, loss of appetite, and after seeking fews doctors and no answer given, finally met one good one who did a CT scan and discovered she had pancreatic cancer.

After hearing this, my heart sink like Titanic. Fast fast go check it out from the net.

Pancreatic Cancer Symptoms

The main symptoms of pancreatic cancer include the following:

  • Pain in the abdomen, the back, or both
  • Weight loss, often associated with the following:
    • Loss of appetite
    • Bloating
    • Diarrhea or fatty bowel movements that float in water (steatorrhea)
    • Rarely may present with new diabetes in a person with weight loss and nausea
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin)

The symptoms of pancreatic cancer are generally vague and can easily be attributed to other less serious and more common conditions. This lack of specific symptoms explains the high number of people who have a more advanced stage of disease when pancreatic cancer is discovered.

By the time that pancreatic cancer is diagnosed, most people already have disease that has spread to distant sites in the body. Pancreatic cancer is also relatively resistant to medical treatment, and the only potentially curative treatment is surgery.

.. .. .. speechless ..

When I was managing the Reading Center, as we were teaching both English and Bahasa Malaysia together, even for children as young as 4 years old, the common questions parents ask are: will the kids get confused between English and Bahasa Malaysia?

OK, let me share my experience. My daughter joins the class when she was 3+ yo. She dislikes BM. English is her favorite. As she know all alphabets (capital and lower case by 2 yo), she starts with suku kata for BM. English, straight learn words.

For the first 3 months, it’s sometimes headache for teacher to draw her attention to read the suku kata flash cards. But she did look and read at least once. (Sometimes she even told the teacher ahead that she will only read till which suku kata).

Six months down the road, I must say, suddenly, to the teacher supprise, whenever the teacher flashes the suku kata cards, she is able to pronounce correctly and without spelling it out. E.g. Showing a card “ba”, she straight pronounces it without spelling out ‘b’-‘a’-‘ba’. Then she moved on to learn words in BM. Showing her “baca”, she can pronounce it without spelling it out as well. We are thrilled. .. Then the toughest part came. She can read the whole book by the age of 4 but when asked the meaning, she dont know a lot of the them. Now at this stage, I believe it’s the time we need to introduce back the pictures and let her visualize what the words mean.

Now, back to the question, will they get confused? Yes. Initially she will pronounce ‘ba’ more like a ‘be’ (like English) and ‘i’ as ‘eye’. But this is just a … how should I put it, one of the milestone. What we need to do is correct it, explain to them in BM, how should it be pronounced. And be patient and allow them to make the same mistake again and again, as long as you let them know what is not right everytime they pronounce it wrongly. KEY NOTE: NO SCOLDING !!!

One day, they will just get over it. Then it will move to next phase. They start to be interested to know what a thing is called in different different language. They will start to ask in BM what is this called, or I want you to say in BM / English … etc.

So it’s important that you are there to help them and make thing interesting.

About 3 weeks ago, during the session in Twindle Wink, there was one part where the children were told they were going to a forest. Then the teacher led them to a room, light was off, and the children were given a small torch light. What a surprise. They decorated the room with leaves, small plants, toys(animals), boxes (caves). Just like a forest. Then the teacher  show the way and asked the children to look for different different animals and plants. 🙂 .. I better don’t disclose too much, then no surprise already.

Then the following week, they explored the forest again, but this time, the teacher wanted them to look for seeds of a plant, like coconut, rubber seed, etc.

And last week, they took the trip again, but this time, they smell the different different plants like pandan leaves, that was taught in the previous sessions (forgot to mention, every session, they will introduce some plants with flash cards, story/info about the plants, what is it used for, etc, and always ended with the real plant for the kids to touch and smell).

Keep up the good work Tweedle Wink.
