Science – Shadows and shapes

on:This is one exam question which Ying came back saying the teacher told her she was wrong:
The shape of a shadow is the same as the shape of the object. (True/False)
And my teaching:
So, even my girl’s teacher deduct her exam mark, I am still gonna tell my girls, the answer is “False”. Teacher is wrong.
Science : Animals Lesson Plan

on:Lesson plan to introduce science topics on Animals, especially for children going to primary 2 next year.
Day 1 : Animals
Day 2 : Animals Life Cycle
Day 3 : Adaptations in Animals
Day 4 : Hibernation and Migration
This video teaches Hibernation and Migration in Animals. And do you know, there is a different between Sleeping and Hibernation? Check it out.
This video gives a good introduction to adaptation in animals.
The definition given for “Adaptation” = The features in animals in which help them to survive in their habitats.
This video gives a brief walk through for Life Cycles of birds, frogs, butterflies and mosquitoes.

on:This video introduces the different type of animal habitat: Aerial, Aquatic, Terrestrial, Polar and Arboreal; as well as different eating habits: Carnivores, Herbivores, Omnivores (do you know these words come from Latin? 🙂 ).
mm.. they learn new English vocab as well.
Std 2 Science – Light
Posted September 3, 2013
on:I am going through the chapter of Light Energy in this book with my girls. I find the topics covered are more … mm… how to say ‘全面‘, ‘all rounded’ in this book.
In their school textbook, it teaches what is light source, and focus more on the formation shadows due to “light gets block by object”. But I like what this book teaches: the key of light energy is light travels in straight line.
And shadow is formed, when the light, which travels in straight line, is blocked.
Also, there are a few more sub-topic covered in this book which I like:
– we can see things because things reflect light into our eyes. And a good example to explain Moon is not a light source, but it reflects light from the Sun. (I go throw the below question with my girls and they are able to comprehend why we can see the Moon though it’s not a light source; how the light actually travels from the Sun to the Moon and then to the Earth)
– the explanation of transparent, translucent and opaque materials by the mean of light passing through materials.
– how to change the size of the shadow (my girls’ favorite question)
– the different of shadows at different time in a day
May be some of these will be covered in higher primary classes. Just sharing here. I like how this book organizes the content for this chapter Light Energy.
Episode: Hops Home (click on this link if you are not able to watch the video here)
I recommended this series “I Wonder Why” quite some time ago. Last holiday, my girls brought these books along for vacation. And they enjoyed reading it.
I happened to go through one of them, and I found this one from the Series quite suitable for Std 1 & 2 students. Quite related to the science subject they study in school.
The font used in the book are quite big, and there are small funny notes and pictures.
They also cover other interesting questions like “Do plants have babies?”,”Which plant’runs’ ?”, “Do crocodiles eat their babies?”, “When do seahorses pop?”, “What do spiders keep in sacs?” …
If your children like the Young Scientist magazine, they might like this.

on:I am using some chapters in below book to help Ling understands more about the topics ‘Animal Life Cycle’.
I like the way they organized it, and those brief examples they give. At least some additional general knowledge my girls gain going through these pages:
And this is a more detail explanation about 3-Stage Life Cycle of Insects:
And this is about 4-Stage Life Cycle of Insects:
